Panchang is the traditional Vedic almanac with five (panch) limbs (anga): tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga (sun-moon angle), and karana (half-tithi). Together they describe the cosmic quality of any given day and form the basis for selecting auspicious muhurats.

What is Tithi and why does it matter?

Tithi is the lunar day — the angular distance between the Sun and Moon, divided into 30 segments per lunar month. Different tithis are auspicious for different activities — marriage, business launch, travel, fasting. Knowing the running tithi is essential for muhurat selection.

Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions (each 13°20') the Moon transits through. Each carries unique qualities, a ruling deity, and a planetary lord. The Nakshatra of the day is one of the most important factors in selecting muhurats and reading daily energy.

How is Panchang calculated?

Rahu Kaal is the inauspicious period of approximately 90 minutes ruled by Rahu each day. It varies by weekday and location. Traditional practice avoids starting important new ventures during Rahu Kaal, though it is fine for routine activities and continuing work already in motion.
